An endline tells you what went wrong. A midline lets you fix it.

Most programmes drift. Assumptions made at design meet reality, some activities land well and others quietly underperform, and without a deliberate check nobody escalates it.

A midline is the structured pause. It measures progress against the baseline, identifies which parts of the theory of change are holding up, and delivers a short list of changes you can implement in the remaining period — not recommendations for your next proposal.

Questions we get asked

Monitoring tells you what you delivered; a midline tells you whether it is working. They answer different questions. If your monitoring is strong we use it heavily and run a lighter, cheaper midline focused on outcomes rather than activity counts.

A midline that surfaces problems and a credible plan to fix them strengthens your position considerably. Donors are far more concerned by teams that discover issues at endline than by teams that found and addressed them halfway.

We debrief emerging findings verbally within two weeks of completing fieldwork, precisely because a midline is worthless if the report arrives after the decision window closed. The full report follows three to four weeks later.

For the core indicators, yes — comparability is the whole point. We add targeted questions about implementation experience, but we do not change the wording of anything we need to compare.

Then we say it, with the evidence and the reasoning. It has happened. Closing an ineffective programme early is a far better outcome for everyone than spending the remaining budget to prove it did not work.
